Exploring the environment through photography

Using Photography in the KS3 Geography Curriculum

Plan your own workshop using our resources for teachers

Your school can run its own Colliers Green Focus field-trip and enter pupils' images into our new Mobile photography competition. All shortlisted students are invited to attend our annual awards ceremony in London with their teacher where their work will be exhibited. The first prize is £1,000 of photography equipment for the school.

We encourage teachers to make use of mobile phone cameras during the day. Most young people now possess mobile phones with good quality built-in cameras and this could overcome practical difficulties if the school does not have access to a set of digital compact cameras. However, we accept entries taken by both digital compact and mobile phone cameras.

Each school can submit up to ten images. Find out how to enter.

Free INSET Sessions and Resources

Geography teachers can attend one of our two-hour INSET sessions led by our professional geographer and photographer. They will provide a step by step guide to planning and leading a stimulating day out for students using photography to capture a 'sense of place'. Cameras are provided and previous skills in photography are not required - this is a great opportunity to try something new! Teachers attending our free training will also receive a copy of our resource book, Picturing the World, and DVD to support their project.

A new resource booklet, My School in Focus, is now available and gives further ideas for projects which look closely at the school environments. We are encouraging schools to create and preserve photographic recordings of their surrounding in celebration of National Photography Month, June 2012.

Confirmed dates and venues for 2012 INSET sessions are:

  • 12 MARCH, 15.30-17.30, East Sussex
  • 21 MARCH, 15.30-17.30, Walsall
  • 25 APRIL, 15.30-17.30, Newcastle
  • 27 APRIL, 15.30-17.30, Leeds

Sessions will also be held in South Wales and Bristol in May.
